Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort, Spa & Nature Park, located in the Riviera Maya celebrated the First Mayan/Tibetan Cultural Encounter with great success. The knowledge, philosophy and art of these two ancient cultures was analyzed and studied in the face of 2012. both groups share deep values related to life, harmony and spiritual peace.

With national and international press in attendance, the local media, tourists and distinguished members of society witnessed this coming together of these ancient cultures on September 8-11, 2011. this cultural fusion was held in honor of the World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) World Tourism Day. this year’s theme is Tourism Linking Cultures.

The eco tourism complex is owned by Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences and is recognized as an example of sustainability and preservation of the natural environment and Mayan culture, so it was the ideal setting to promote the preservation and diffusion of these two cultures and analyze their pasts, evaluate their present and study their vision for the future of humanity.

Rimpoche Gala, representative of the group The Mystical Arts of Tibet, made up of the Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery and Richard Gere Productions thanked Hacienda Tres Ríos for hosting this encounter which helped to preserve and promote his culture which has been put in jeopardy by the political situation of the country.

The monk acknowledged the similarities between the Tibetan and Mayan cultures. both are interested in the common good and obtaining inner peace. as far as the possibility of the world ending in the year 2012, which some feel the Mayan calendar indicates, Rimponche Gala emphasized that we should worry more about our own existence as free beings and living each day in harmony and to the fullest because nobody knows when their time on earth will end.

For three days the Tibetan monks constructed the Green Tara Mandala in the lobby with the purpose of bringing healing energy and peace to the world, resolving conflicts, and promoting success in work and prosperity. The Mandala, made from colored sand, was then destroyed in the closing ceremony symbolizing the impermanence of all things.

During the event, a documentary about Tibetan culture was shown and many ceremonies were held, such as the Lama Chopa Puja, which consists of prayers and offerings. in addition, the Praises to the 21 Taras was held to eliminate obstacles, negativity and sickness, as well as to attract good fortune and long life. Pujas or blessing ceremonies were held to transform any negative energy into positive. The Mayan culture was represented by Mayan Art Productions and its director Mary Cobá Cupul, who lead different ceremonies like the ceremony to welcome the monks, a cenote rebirth ceremony, during which participants are submerged in the cenote and reemerge with a higher consciousness, and the fire ceremony to bring peace and take us back to the maternal womb. in addition healings and cleansings were performed and participants experienced the Mayan sweat bath, Temazcal.

Other activities included conferences presented by experts in Prehispanic culture and world religions. The archeologist Tomás Pérez Suárez highlighted the richness of Mayan culture and emphasized the importance of learning more about its legacy. He pointed out the need to clear up the end of the world prophecy that is attributed to the Mayans but that so far has not been confirmed, but only contemplated by a few investigators.

Writer Juan Galván Paulín recognized the attention the Mayan culture has received and acknowledged the spiritual necessity of Tibetans. He seemed to agree with Rimpoche Gala about the importance of working towards the common good and looking for solutions together.

Conferences during First Mayan/Tibeten Cultural Encounter included: The Mayan Linguistic Family: History and Diversity, Tibet: Myth and Religion, Plastic Expressions: a Dynamic and Natural Art; The Mandala, Calendar and Writings: History and Registering Time, and Similarities and Differences in Buddist and Prehispanic Mayan thought.

But, if the Mayan calendar is to be believed the world will end on December 21, 2012. the calendar shows no dates after December 21, 2012, therefore people believe that it will indeed be the doomsday. the Mayan civilization dates back to 2000 BC-250 AD. it is noted for developing the only known fully-developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as for its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Archaeologists have found remains of Mayan civilisation in Honduras, Guatemala, Northern El Salvador and Mexico. Based on their calculations the Mayans developed their calendar. it is believed that the calculations used in the making of that calendar at that time still holds strong. according to them, a planet will collide with earth and destroy it on December 21, 2011.

Infante, Marlins working on new contract

ATLANTA — When the Marlins move into their new ballpark in 2012, Omar Infante hopes to be part of the transition.

Eligible for free agency after the season, Infante has made it clear he wants to remain with the Marlins.

There is mutual interest, and negotiations are ongoing regarding a contract extension that would keep Infante in Miami for at least one more year.

“I want to come back,” Infante said Wednesday afternoon. “I want to stay here and play every day.”

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, ground still needs to be made up in the multiyear deal. but there is a chance Infante could reach agreement before the end of the season.

If nothing is agreed upon, Infante could file for free agency after the World Series. As of now, indications are the Venezuelan infielder will sign before that.

The Marlins acquired Infante, who will turn 30 on Dec. 26, along with reliever Mike Dunn from the Braves for Dan Uggla last November.

Infante has played a Gold Glove Award-caliber second base, making six errors in 132 games.

At the plate, he’s hitting .279 with five home runs and 43 RBIs.

While with the Braves, Infante signed a two-year, $4.325 million contract in 2009. the deal included a $2.5 million club option that the Marlins picked up for this year.

Florida’s payroll projects to jump to more than $70 million — perhaps as high as $80 million — in 2012. It was about $58 million this year.

The Marlins already have five players locked up at $45.25 million for 2012, which will be the inaugural season at their retractable-roof ballpark near downtown Miami.

Hanley Ramirez will make $15 million in ’12, and Josh Johnson is slated to earn $13.75 million. Ricky Nolasco ($9 million), John Buck ($6 million) and Randy Choate ($1.5 million) round out the veterans signed for next year.

Ramirez, Johnson and Choate are currently on the disabled list.

Despite a 67-81 record, Infante sees a promising future with the Marlins.

Infante feels the team can turn things around if it improves its starting pitching.

“I like the new ballpark,” Infante said. “I like the young players on this team.”

Link from SPARK to OWL is in testing phase

A link is currently being tested to connect two University of Massachusetts internet tools used widely on campus.

SPARK, the learning management system used for on-campus courses and OWL, the online homework tool used at UMass, may integrate after being tested in several courses this spring and could be available on campus by next fall, according to staff at the Office of Information Technology.

The integration will be helpful for campus not only because it will allow students to log into both tools together and not separately, but it will provide instructors with many useful upgrades.

Instructors using both SPARK and OWL will be able to “use each tool to do what it does best rather than settling for a less than ideal approach or having to build additional features into a tool that duplicates existing capabilities in the other,” according to OIT.

Specifically, instructors will be able to transfer OWL grades into the SPARK grade book, as well as transferring all grades into SPIRE by means of the current SPARK to SPIRE connection. Instructors using SPARK will also be able to add the advanced homework and questioning capabilities of OWL to the normal quizzing and surveying features found in SPARK without managing two rosters, and can rosters students into their OWL course and manage add/drops in their OWL enrollment.

The link, being tested in approximately 10 courses, will get an evaluation by both instructors and students, and OIT’s Academic Computing division and the Center for Educational Software Development will determine if the link should be available across campus in the fall.

MotoGP 2012: Schedule Released

The two U.S. rounds of the MotoGP World Championship will be held three weeks apart without a trip back to Europe in between; the season will again start in Qatar and end in Valencia; and the German Grand Prix won’t be held in Sachensring. those are the main points of today’s release of next year’s provisional MotoGP World Championship by the FIM and Dorna.

American race fans will find the Red Bull United States Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca will be held on July 29 with the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway set to run on August 19 – three weeks later. The MotoGP paddock will be pleased to know they don’t have to return to Europe between the two rounds like they did this year when they raced in the Czech Republic between Laguna and Indy.

The German Grand Prix, scheduled for July 8, won’t be held at the Sachsenring in 2012, though the replacement circuit has yet to be named.

The 18-race series will again start under the lights in Qatar on April 15 before venturing to Spain for Jerez on April 29. from there things stay the course, until the series hits U.S shores. The only other major change is that Malaysia and Australia have flopped with the Malaysian GP set to take place on October 21 with Australia a week later on October 28. this year, the series goes to Australia on October 14 before going to Malaysia a week later.
